Pregnancy, Perinatal and PostPartum Mental Health

At Create Space, we are dedicated to the health, safety, and wellbeing of women. In the U.S., being pregnant and giving birth should not carry such great risk. And yet, before, during, and after childbirth, women in our country are dying at a higher rate from pregnancy-related causes than in any other developed nation.

With us, you will find a place and receive the care you deserve and need to be the best version of yourself. Here at Create Space, we have a deeper understanding of the cultural, social and historical context and complexity of maternal mental health for women and families of color.

  • Postpartum Depression (PPD): This is more severe and persistent than the "baby blues," which are relatively mild depressive and anxiety symptoms that typically clear up on their own within two weeks after delivery. PPD symptoms may include severe mood swings, feelings of worthlessness, detachment from the baby, and thoughts of harming oneself or the baby.

  • Postpartum Anxiety: Women experiencing postpartum anxiety may have intense worries and fears, often about the health and safety of the baby. This anxiety can interfere with daily life and may come with physical symptoms like a racing heart, hot flashes, or nausea.

  • Postpartum Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): This disorder is characterized by intrusive, obsessive thoughts, often about harming the baby, and compulsive behaviors performed in an attempt to ease these thoughts.

  • Postpartum Panic Disorder: Symptoms include panic attacks, which are sudden periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, numbness, or a feeling that something terrible is about to happen.

  • Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Can occur after a traumatic childbirth experience. Symptoms include reliving the trauma, avoidance of reminders of the event, heightened reactivity, and anxiety.

  • Postpartum psychosis: This is a rare but severe condition that typically develops within the first week after delivery. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, confusion, and disorientation. It's considered a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.
